About Aimee | They/them

Dr. Aimee Ruscio is a psychologist in northwest DC, although they are licensed in most states. They work with adult individuals and couples. Aimee helps overachieving professionals, LGBTIQ folx, and people who have experienced trauma or neglect to feel stronger and more confident in their lives. Aimee has a deep dedication to serving the LGBTQ+ community, especially trans and non-binary clients. As an Army veteran, they have extensive experience working with Service members and veterans and other high-achieving professionals, including advanced training for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Aimee uses Emotion-Focused Therapy, in which clients develop a greater capacity to understand and use emotions effectively. In session, clients learn to identify healthy emotions that point them in the direction they want to go. They also learn to identify painful emotions from past experiences that need attention and transformation. With EFT, clients learn to make sense of and use their emotions to move their life in the direction of their goals. Clients often leave therapy feeling more confident and emotionally stronger. Aimee received their PhD from the Uniformed Services University. Outside of private practice, they enjoy hiking on local trails.

Message to clients

You’ve tried to be superhuman and you just can’t do it anymore You’re an overachiever. You come through at work. You get up early and stay late. Lately, you feel tired and irritated with the people around you. You want to count on others, but they let you down, so you add more to your to do list, because at least that way, you know that it will get done. Working Hard Has Felt Like It Will Solve Things, But It Never Does When things aren’t right, you feel anxious about whether or not your boss/partner/friend will be mad at you. You hustle, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t get everything done. Sometimes you feel like the problem is you. If you tried harder or had a better system, then you’d be able to do it all. But no matter what you try, you never quite get to the place where you can exhale and relax. You feel worn out and like you aren’t measuring up all the time. You regret what you’ve given up to succeed. The success feels empty. Imagine Slowing Down And Having A Fulfilling Life You want to slow down. You want to feel like you are enough. You want a full life: family, friendship, hobbies, fun, in addition to finding fulfilment in work. You want to be good at what you do, but in a way that allows you to enjoy your life and stay in the game for the long term.

I've had the privilege to know Dr. Ruscio since we met in graduate school in 2010. From the start, I appreciated their uniquely sharp clinical acumen combined with an unwavering reverence for their clients' humanity and individuality. Though many clinicians have strengths in one of these areas, Dr. Ruscio stands out for how they integrate skillful intervention while prioritizing a genuine, compassionate connection. Since I started private practice, Dr. Ruscio has consistently been at the top of my referral list.

I have witnessed how Aimee's empathy and expertise guides clients through trauma and emotional distress and moves them toward transformation and healing. In addition to their extensive training in Emotion-Focused Therapy, Aimee brings their professional and personal experiences to support the specific needs of military veterans and the LGBTQIA+ community. I would trust Aimee with my nearest and dearest and wholeheartedly recommend them as a therapist.
