About
Gulrukh (Gul) Khan, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), is the founder of Empowering Roots Therapy, a private practice based in Etobicoke and serving clients across Ontario virtually. She specializes in supporting South Asian, immigrant, and BIPOC individuals navigating the pressures of cultural expectations, anxiety, people-pleasing, intergenerational trauma, and identity struggles. With a background in psychology and biology, Gul brings a deep understanding of the mind–body connection into her therapeutic work. She integrates evidence-based approaches, including IFS Parts work, CBT/DBT, trauma-informed and attachment-based therapy, somatic tools, and mindfulness practices to provide care that is both holistic and personalized. Her areas of focus include anxiety, grief, people-pleasing, perfectionism, burnout, and relationship ruptures. Gul has a particular interest in helping high-functioning people of colour who appear successful on the outside but often feel unseen, overwhelmed, or disconnected internally. Grounded in warmth, cultural sensitivity, and compassion, Gul creates a safe and collaborative space where clients can explore the roots of their struggles, release inherited burdens, and begin building lives that align with both their heritage and personal well-being. Through Empowering Roots, Gul is dedicated to guiding clients toward greater clarity, self-trust, and emotional resilience—reminding them that healing is not about changing who they are, but reclaiming who they were always meant to be.

Message to clients
If you’re here, chances are you’ve been carrying more than anyone can see. On the outside, you might look like you’re holding everything together — successful, dependable, always there for others. But inside, you may feel exhausted, anxious, or stuck in patterns that keep repeating: people-pleasing, overthinking, guilt, or tension in your body that never seems to go away. I get how heavy this feels. Many of my clients grew up balancing cultural pressures with their own needs, often learning to silence their voice just to keep the peace. Over time, this can leave you feeling unseen, disconnected, or like you’ve lost parts of yourself. I want you to know you don’t have to keep doing this alone. In therapy, I offer a warm, compassionate space where you can finally exhale. Together, we’ll untangle the patterns holding you back, heal wounds that run across generations, and help you reconnect with the parts of you that deserve to be heard and cared for. I use an integrated, trauma-informed approach that draws on IFS, CBT/DBT, somatic tools, and attachment-based therapy, always tailored to your unique story. My goal is to help you find clarity, strengthen your voice, and build relationships and a life that honours both your heritage and your well-being. You don’t need to have it all figured out to start. You just need a safe space to begin, and I would be honoured to walk with you on that journey.

Robert Langston, RP
Gul strives to provide “therapy that sees the whole person, honours culture and identity, and holds space for the complexity of being ‘in between worlds’.” She speaks English, Hindi, and Urdu, which can help clients feel more comfortable and understood. While I have not personally experienced her work, I trust her integrity and feel confident in referring clients to her.
