About
His passion for working with serious mental health issues brought John to UTMB-CMC within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. His experiences gained while working in a maximum security prison psychiatric hospital reinforced a desire to focus more on earlier interventions, before inpatient, incarceration, or worse limited positive outcomes for patients. This motivated him to continue training in various approaches to tailor treatment for each unique patient, despite the severity of behaviors and conflict often present with these patient populations. John has years of experience treating psychosis spectrum, mood, personality disorders, as well as a number of other presenting concerns. His practice’s goals are to collaborate with you, to find an appropriate therapy approach for your unique challenges, and ultimately help you build a life in line with your values.

Message to clients
Have you sometimes had thoughts like; why did the mothership leave me, or how is this so much easier for everyone else? Do you struggle despite doing the “right” things only to continue feeling obligation and bitterness? Issues with procrastination, anxiety, depression, and/or substance use? Sometimes we have to start over, only to be stopped by the shame and humiliation of where we find ourselves. Other times, we are moving along fine until we get hit with a curve ball out of nowhere. Either way,I get it. This was not the plan. My ideal patient is simply one that is ready to change. If you made it this far and you still have questions or concerns, I am happy to discuss those with you during a free consultation.

Brett Needham, LCSW
The combination of John's gentle demeanor and his training in/use of evidence based treatments/interventions make him an excellent psychotherapist. He is effective at helping clients clarify their values/goals, and take meaningful steps towards them. He is also skilled at conceptualizing cases and reaches out for peer consultation when needed.
Michele Bachman, LPC-S
