About
Owner of Road To Change Counseling, Raquel has predominantly worked with young adults to create a sense of “togetherness” so they don’t feel alone in their struggles. She believes therapy is a place where you can go to figure things out, without external pressures. Raquel specializes working with adults in various life stage transitions. With an insight oriented approach, she works with clients to help them develop greater self-awareness, self-compassion and a stronger capacity to handle life’s transitions. Raquel’s experience includes working with diverse populations such as children, adolescents, and adults in both school based and community clinic settings. Her background treating young adults experiencing their first episode of psychosis (FEP) sparked the development of her empathic stance and insight into a wide range of challenges, from severe mental illness to the hazards of everyday life. Although she no longer works with FEP, she prioritizes improving the quality of treatment that is offered to individuals coming to her practice and invests in ongoing professional development to better train new therapists entering the field.

Message to clients
We all have a particular perspective on how we interpret events and relationship in our lives. This outlook is shaped by our upbringing, what was modeled by caretakers, and the relationships that influenced our identity. I want to help you take a closer look at the past to understand how it shapes who you are today, the challenges and difficulties you face and the dynamics of your relationships. Exploration into one’s own mind, feelings and conflicts is central to how I practice. My approach to clients is direct, compassionate and curious, towards assisting you in finding your own answers and making decisions for yourself in ways you might not have been able to before. If you’re an adult who is currently in a new stage of life- maybe trying to adjust to the changes of entering adulthood, rediscovering yourself in mid to late life, or in the thick of becoming a mother- and you’re seeking a judgement free, compassionate space to get support, I’m here to offer just that.

Constance E. Dunlap, MD
For the past five years, I have worked with Ms. Raquel Adams, who has served as the project team lead of a seven-member committee of clinicians tasked with producing videotaped interviews of living Black psychoanalysts who graduated from the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis. She is an innovative and critical thinker with exceptional leadership skills. Patients will find that she is a person of integrity, empathy, and kindness with an exceptional ability to conceptualize processes from a psychoanalytic perspective while providing culturally-informed care.

Raquel Adams is a highly gifted therapist with advanced post graduate training. I have referred several young adults to Raquel who are all extremely appreciative and thriving in therapy with her. She is sensitive and skilled with patients across many types of diversity- age, gender, sexual identity/orientation, race, and ability. I highly recommend her and refer to her often.
